(French 1,000 Guineas)
PRECIEUSE
Owner: Mrs. Anne-Marie Hayes
Brendan Hayes and Fabrice Chappet first met when the former managed Richard Strauss’s Kilfrush Stud and the latter was assistant to Robert Collet. 20 years later, as the question “when are you going to send me a horse?” was raised, “when you win the Yacowlef [a Listed race for 2yo newcomers that Kilfrush Stud won on multiple occasions]” was Brendan’s answer. And true to his word, after Fabrice had won the earmarked contest in 2014 with MOCKLERSHILL and the following year with MONEY MAKER, a chestnut yearling filly by Tamayuz arrived at his yard from Knocktoran.
Given the auspicious name of PRECIEUSE, she ran 2nd in all her three outings as a juvenile, two of which took place in Listed company over 1200m and even 1100m (6f and 5.5f). She broke her maiden in style on her seasonal bow, before filling the runner-up spot once again in the Gr.3 Prix Sigy, still over 1200m. This unusual Classic prep worked its magic on the big day as PRECIEUSE unleashed a spectacular burst of speed to win the Gr.1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches by two lengths on her first effort beyond 6f.
Sold to Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm on the back of her Classic triumph, she was desperately unlucky in the Gr.1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot before being exported to America.
2018 Prix Jean Prat Gr.1
(1,600m, 3yos)
INTELLOGENT
Owner: Mrs. Fiona Carmichael
Like Precieuse for Brendan Hayes, INTELLOGENT was the first horse Fabrice received from British owner Fiona Carmichael, who in a handful of years had tasted Group 1 glory through the likes of HAVANA GOLD, TORONADO and IVAWOOD. A €320,000 yearling purchase by Amanda Skifington at the ARQANA August Yearling Sale from the draft of Ecurie des Monceaux, Intellogent proved his connections right with an eye-catching first-time-out victory at Saint-Cloud in October of his two-year-old season.
At three, he gradually made his way to the top, winning the Classic trial Gr.3 Prix de Guiche and running 4th in a blanket finish in the Gr.1 Prix du Jockey-Clud (French Derby). The drop down to a straight mile saw him grad the Gr.1 trophy he deserved in the Prix Jean Prat.
Since then, INTELLOGENT has taken his owner all over the world, finishing “in the money” in the Arlington Million, the Bahrain
International Trophy and on the inaugural Saudi Cup undercard.
